Characteristics of DJI Wood
Djindja Udu is a tree with a height of about 20-25 meters. The straight branch-free trunk is 18-21 meters long and has a diameter of 60-80 cm. Fresh is the wood yellow-brown to golden brown sometimes with a gray or olive-like tint. There is no clear transition to the lighter yellowish sapwood and the wood has no noticeable smell or taste (especially dry).
Overall, Dji is a difficult wood to work, being extremely hard and dense, with high cutting resistance during sawing. Ipe also has a pronounced blunting effect on cutting edges. The wood generally planes smoothly, but the grain can tearout on interlocked areas. Also, Ipe can be difficult to glue properly, and surface preparation prior to gluing is recommended. Straight-grained wood turns well, though the natural powdery yellow deposits can sometimes interfere with polishing or finishing the wood.
Djinda Udu is mainly used for floors, carpentry, interior and exterior paneling, furniture, shipbuilding, turning, decorative veneer and paper.
